A personal perspective: an inventor details some frustrations, laughs in developing the "gene gun." (bombarding plant cells with transforming-DNA coated microprojectiles)

Article Abstract:

The development of a ballistic process in the introduction of foreign genes to plant cells received considerable ridicule for the first four years of its incipience. The inventor had to overcome much difficulty in finding funds to see the project to fruition. Although many did not give serious consideration to the project which started in 1983, the inventor applied for a patent, and by the end of the project in 1990, almost all of the ideas listed in the patent had been realized.
