Surgical spirit

Article Abstract:

Designing a new building for use as a GP surgery poses many problems for the architect, who must therefore take care to listen carefully to what the clients require. Developments in health care provision mean that new surgery buildings must be extremely flexible, and there are often funding difficulties to be taken into consideration. Penoyre & Prasad had to bear all these factors in mind when designing the new Walworth surgery on an inner city backland site in south London, and played an important role from the very beginning of the project. The GPs' requirements are discussed in detail.

An amazing mulch

Article Abstract:

The IRT-76 polyethylene mulch suppresses weed growth by blocking 80% to 84% of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and creating high temperatures under its surface. Although it blocks most PAR, it is still capable of transmitting 45% to 50% of of the sun's radiant energy, thereby raising mean diurnal soil temperature by around 1.5 degrees celsius more than black polyethylene mulch. Field experiments reveal that compared with black mulch, IRT-76 can cause early leaf canopy development in melon to increase between 20% and 400%, while total yield can increase by as much as 20% to 30%.
