A legacy of wanton thievery: outnumbered by pot hunters, federal undercover agents seek to curb a frenzy of looting before relics of the Native American past vanish forever
Article Abstract:
Looting of archaeological sites on federal lands and the illegal trade in artifacts represents an overwhelming problem for federal land management agencies, including the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and Forest Service, who must protect an estimated two million archaeological sites on 104.4 million acres of public land. According to a report by the General Accounting Office, only about seven percent of the sites have been surveyed. Approximately 1200 looting incidents were reported from Oct 1980-Mar 1986, which may represent only a quarter of the actual cases.

Dilettantes in the game of life
Article Abstract:
Anthony G. Hillerman's novels of Navajo life and crimes on their reservation frequently implicate archaeologists, who he thinks are often insulated from real life. It is also easy to paint them as outsiders in reservation life, driven by interests and passions alien to those around them. He has also, however, written in glowing terms of some archaeologists. He remains most interested in the country people who struggle for a living, rather than the voyeurs who study their past with no interest in their modern concerns.

Historic messages
Article Abstract:
Nancy Hunter Warren, New Mexico's chief archeological photographer, is fascinated by the modern pictographs and petroglyphs she finds. They record many Native American impressions of white men and their culture, from the state's first railroad to a package of Lucky Strikes. A selection of photographs is included.
