A model exhibition
Article Abstract:
The 'Ancient Rooms' exhibition at Rome's National Archaeological Museum serves as a model for how museums can make use of their stored artifacts. Controversy has often surrounded archaeological museums' large reserves of relics that are never displayed or published for the public's use. The exhibit utilizes materials the museum has owned for over many years to recreate the atmosphere of a housing section of Rome in the second and third centuries AD. The exhibition also serves as an example of the importance of keeping a collection intact.

Lure of the field
Article Abstract:
Summer field work is an important aspect of archaeological studies, even for undergraduates. Over 300 excavations in about 40 countries are listed in the Archaeological Institute of America's 'Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin.' The institute is also establishing an Undergraduate Archaeological Research Fund to ensure that cost will not bar anyone from participating in summer field work. Programs should be investigated by interested parties to make sure that they provide educational opportunities for participants.

Selective preservation
Article Abstract:
Archaeologists in Rome are considering whether the Street of Empire built by Mussolini should be destroyed to excavate the Roman structures underneath. Fascism is a part of the city's history, which may interest archaeologists of the future, despite the condemnatory attitude of the present. Beyond contemporary political views, a duty to the archaeology of the future must also be considered as part of the service to the past.
