Festival as reconciliation: Latvian exile homecoming in 1990
Article Abstract:
The 1990 song festival at Riga, Latvia was an occasion for exiles' homecoming, and it shows how festivals can uphold the cultural idea of a nation. During World War Two, about 100,000 Latvians were displaced from their homeland, and many went to other countries after the war instead of living under Soviet occupation. The festival occurred one year before Latvia seceded from the Soviet Union.
