Kore's return: statuary from the sanctuary
Article Abstract:
The Thesmophoria were fertility festivals celebrated in Cyrene as well as Athens. They were celebrated in early autumn before the grain planting under the charge of married citizen women. Statues of Demeter and Kore (Persephone) are of particular importance in the ritual reenactments comprising the Thesmorphoria. Two statues found in the Cyrene sanctuary were constructed with hollow backs and may have contained magical materials or consecrated grain to speed germination of the grain. Considered in the context of the Thesmophoria, the two deities may have also represented human fertility.
