Finding the tomb of a Moche priestess
Article Abstract:
The excavation of a Moche priestess's tomb at San Jose de Moro in Peru yielded important new understanding of that culture. The Moche culture thrived along Peru's north coast from AD 100 to 800. The value of the items found in the tomb demonstrates that women could have wealth and power in that society. Most important, the priestess has been identified as a specific person who played a known role in such religious rites as the Sacrifice Ceremony.

Inside the royal tombs of the Moche
Article Abstract:
Excavations of Moche tombs at Sipan, Peru, have yielded a rich trove of artifacts and promise greater finds. The Moche occupied river valleys in Peru from the late BC era until 1,000 years ago. Great builders and traders, they had settlements of over 50,000 people. The Sipan site is the most splendid yet found, featuring the tomb of a man known as the Lord of Sipan. Five layered tombs and a complex have been excavated; work has begun on a sixth.
