Saga of the Nineveh marbles
Article Abstract:
An Assyrian sculpture is traced from Ottoman Mesopotamia to Christies auction house where in 1994 it commanded $11.9 million, the highest price paid for an antiquity at auction. The reliefs were found in 1845 when a young adventurer discovered the remains of the palace of Assyrian King Assurnasirpal II at the ancient Assyrian capital of Kalhu. He secured a number of slabs for his first cousin Lady Charlotte Bertie Guest, who incorporated them into the porch wall of her nineteenth-century country manor in England.
