British industry: myopic or misguided?
Article Abstract:
British manufacturing industries are suffering the most from the country's roller-coaster economy, and need to see fair terms of competition and stability. In a recession it is relatively cheap and easy to make employees redundant in Britain, compared to other parts of Europe, where it redundancies are difficult and expensive, but companies are helped with cash payments to keep employees on short time working, in preparation for any upturn. In Britain projects have to be abandoned if they exceed a critical payback period of, say, 18 months, whereas in Germany, the project is given the go ahead on a three year payback.
