"Let it go to the garlic!": evil eye and the fertility of women among the Sephardim
Article Abstract:
Sephardim folklore, found in Indo-European and Semitic cultures, held that the evil eye complex stemmed from praising another individual who would then be harmed by envious spirits. Sephardic women, particularly in regard to fertility and childbirth, were the focus of the evil eye complex and perpetuated the religious and social structure surrounding their beliefs. The evil eye was a great concern for women following childbirth and many superstitious customs surrounded the mother and newborn.
