European office design
Article Abstract:
The 1993 Bureau Concept Expo (BCE) in Paris, France, saw an increase in exhibitors, but was attended by only one British exhibitor. This is in spite of the fact that office work is central to the UK economy, while the UK is France's biggest office furniture and equipment export market. This was only the second BCE, and as yet it is seen more as a place to refine prototypes than to implement international product launches. Not many great design names exhibited at BCE, but Elixir, a young French design group, showed four impressive product ranges, including the low-cost Nomad range.

Leading light
Article Abstract:
Paul Atkinson is a lighting designer for Concord Lighting. He has a long term contract, which is unusual in the industry. Many of his designs have not been used, but many companies use designs to prevent other companies from using the same ideas. Design features are constrained by the practicalities of lighting, particularly for optical and thermal performance and conforming with standards. Atkinson's design work includes the lighting for Liverpool Street Station using 'flying saucer' fittings and the Bishopsgate escalator entrance.

Starck Reality
Article Abstract:
The Hot Bertaa kettle, designed by Philippe Starck and produced by Alessi, is evaluated by six people who used it for one week. The kettle costs 129 pounds sterling and holds two litres. All of the reviewers noted that the kettle was aesthetically pleasing by totally impractical. The criticisms included that the user is unable to tell when the kettle is full, the handle is too hot to hold and that the user is scalded with steam when pouring.
