J.C. Leyendecker and the homoerotic invention of men's fashion icons, 1910-1930
Article Abstract:
Artist J.C. Leyendecker's images of the American male for magazine covers, posters and advertisements between 1910 and 1930 represent ideal masculinity. Leyendecker's most well known work was for Kuppenheimer clothing. His male images for Kuppenheimer are charged with a homoerotic sensibility that gives rise to aspirations and projections. In such campaigns, Leyendecker was able to impart a consumerist craving among men to buy Kuppenheimer suits and jackets.
