French colonialism remains alive in Ste. Genevieve, MO, the first French settlement in the state. The town also boasts of a German heritage as many Germans migrated to the town in the early to mid-1840s. The Jour de Fete in August and a Bastille Day celebration in July are held in honor of its French and German heritage.

Saving Sainte Genevieve

The National Trust for Historic Preservation's move to include the town of Sainte Genevieve, MO, on its list of 'Endangered Historic Places' focused national attention on the plight of its old buildings. The town, which has a population of 4,500, was settled by French farmers in the 1730s.
