The Y2K solution
Article Abstract:
A mass failure of computer systems is expected at the turn of the millenium on Dec 31, 1999, when PCs will read the year 2000 as invalid and will either make faulty calculations or crash. Referred to as the Year 2000 problem, it behooves interior design firms to develop a Y2K contingency plan before formulating Y2K compliance plans. Designers should look at the Y2K from business, legal and risk aspects, as it may cause their clients problems due to the automated systems they have specified in projects, including heating, ventilation and airconditioning, lighting, security and conveying systems.

The basics of databases
Article Abstract:
Databases will play an important role in interior design in the 21st century. Thus, it is imperative for interior designers to learn the basics of databases to leverage their potential as a medium for storing information relevant to the design process. For instance, the three-tiered architecture provides an efficient method of organizing and accessing data on product catalogues and inventories, sales transactions, customer profiles and other pertinent areas of interest to interior designers. Designers may choose from a host of database software programs such as Microsoft Access and Oracle.

Tapping into the Web's resources
Article Abstract:
The World Wide Web is proving to be a great marketing tool as it has fast become a preferred means to access global information. Since the home page is the first thing that a client encounters when accessing one's Web site, it is important for it to be creative and attractive. The development of a Web site must then undergo six stages, including planning, content, graphic design, programming and technical help, marketing and promotion, and maintenance. Its development must encompass three distinct generations, namely, Web Automating, Web Connecting, and Transparent Web Customization.
