The long, the short and the tall: column widths
Article Abstract:
The selection of line widths for text columns depends on a host of other factors such as vertical spacing, type size and type face. In general, however, moderately wide lines of between 12 to 15 picas are best for standard news pages. Short lines, as a rule, are best used for listings of restaurants and movies. Longer columns, in contrast, are best employed for editorials and commentaries since they are more stable and stately. These basic principles for column widths in print newspapers are also applicable for online design.

Typographic color and emphasis in text type
Article Abstract:
The task of making long texts appear visually stimulating is a job for the typographer. For this purpose, there are a wide array of tools to choose from, including bold face, italic type, underlining, caps, caps and small caps and even white space. The typographer must bear in mind, however, that the idea is to bring the element of visual relief to an otherwise crammed column and to avoid the tendency to overuse the tools that are available.
