When worlds collide

Article Abstract:

Jocelyn Stevens, the former rector of RCA design college, sacked Professor Gert Dumbar in 1987 because of his absence from the college and his undisciplined methods of teaching design. Stevens had told Dumbar's students that they were unemployable as a result, yet he was proved wrong as most secured jobs with top design consultancies. Dumbar was based in Holland where he had a design company and was recruited by Stevens because he was a celebrity. The catalyst for the sacking came when Dumbar was quoted in a magazine comparing the college to a concentration camp.

Ways and means: (signage schemes, London council estates)

Article Abstract:

Labour controlled London Bourough of Hammersmith & Fulham (LBH&F) has commissioned design consultancy Grundy & Northedge to design a system of signage for its council estates. This could be the precedent for other councils to use independent design consultancies. Formerly, Labour controlled councils were reluctant to spend money on such projects, for fear of being accused of wastefulness. The council wishes to show the community it cares about providing information and safety and give the borough a distinguishing mark to help with re-election.

Metadesign, leading Berlin, Germany-based information design studio, is to redesign the Berlin transport company's corporate ID, together with the underground system, following re-unification of East and West Germany. The new signage system is being piloted at Alexanderplatz station in what was formerly East Berlin, and if successful, it will be extended to all 200 U-Bahn stations, the over-ground network, and the bus network. Details of the original and the new system are included.
