Life after Pinatubo
Article Abstract:
Philippine scientists believe that agricultural lands damaged by Mount Pinatubo's eruption can still be used for crop plantation. Most of the lands to be restored are those with less than 7.5 cm of ash fall where ash and sand are blended into the soil and two rice crops can be planted. In lahar-hit areas, rice could also be grown by adding lime and organic fertilizer to the soil, according to studies done by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). Plants and trees could also be cultivated using 'basket farming.'
