Stonehenge for the 1990s
Article Abstract:
The excavations at and around Stonehenge reveal a series of monuments continually remodeled and reworked over many centuries. A circular ditch and bank may belong to the period around 2950 BC. People probably transported bluestones weighing up to four tons to Stonehenge in about 2550 BC. An analysis of bone, pollen and mollusks reveals the changes in landscape over the years. A circular stone monument was probably used as a center for meetings and rituals. The belief that Stonehenge was an astronomical observatory is unlikely but the stones' placement indicates the use of astronomical symbolism.
