Article Abstract:
The house rules of desert photographers shelter viewers from the reality of the landscape. These cult photographers edit to fulfill their vision and society's need to see the desert as a sacred ground of intense color and fragility, photographically void of heat. It allows man to see without opening his eyes to the threatening, uncaring place that it is. Desert photography has an imaginary life of its own.

In 1995, Erbakan's Welfare Party won the election with 21.4% of the votes. The voters had decided to take a chance with his new vision for the country in spite of the possible threat of Islamic fundamentalism. The military-civil balance, and Erbakan's foreign policy, are discussed.
