Influence and inspiration: Francis Bacon, John Deakin, and photography
Article Abstract:
Photographer John Deakin and artist Francis Bacon shared a perceptive and focused vision in their works and exhibits of both artists' works offer an opportunity to examine the famous Bacon's creative process and the largely neglected Deakin's influential and significant works. Though not well known, Deakin was a prolific and talented photographer for British Vogue, for which many of his greatest portraits were taken. Bacon used photographs, both his own and Deakin's, as sources for his paintings and the two artists shared a talent for evoking stark, human emotions in much of their works.
