Tamara Toumanova (1919-1996)
Article Abstract:
Tamara Toumanova's work with George Balanchine encompassed the ballet companies of de Basil and Denham, Ballet Theatre and the Paris Opera Ballet. Balanchine was almost a father figure to her and cared for her and her mother. He had a great zest for life and also a need to retire into his own thoughts. This zest for life is characteristic of Georgians, of which Balanchine was one. Religion was of great importance to him. Balanchine loved to teach when his students understood his goals. Toumanova feels that dancing and choreography are beautiful today but dancers lack the guidance they had in former times.
