Article Abstract:
NASA plans eight space-shuttle missions for 1997, culminating in the start of assembly of the international space station, which could be delayed if Russia does not have the FGB module ready for launch in November. Space experiments, Hubble repairs and a rendezvous with Mir are also planned.

The Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS) was placed in orbit by the Discovery space shuttle in Sep 1991. UARS will study Earth's atmosphere, especially the ozone layer. Research should provide information needed to enact laws to improve earth conditions.
