Going off-road on Mars
Article Abstract:
John R. Wright, one of the nine scientist-engineers designated to drive a Mars Rover sits at his computer console at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and programs his car to scoot around the surface of the Red Planet Mars. NASA hand-built two Rovers, named Spirit and Opportunity, which are powered by solar-panel-rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that drive six 20-watt DC motors with a top speed of 0.1 mph.

Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green set a new land speed record of 763.035 mph on Oct 15, 1996, on a 13-mile course in Black Rock Desert. The achievement shattered the previous record set by Richard Noble and destroyed Craig Breedlove's ambition to be the new recordholder.
