Dateline NBC broadcast misleading video coverage of two older C/K model GM pickup trucks crashing and burning on a Nov 1992 program. During the filming, incendiary devices were used in an attempt to demonstrate a supposed fuel tank defect. NBC later broadcast a retraction.

A safety controversy over the 1973-87 GMC and Chevrolet pickup trucks has involved General Motors Corp in about 100 lawsuits. The fuel systems, mounted on the outside of the frame rails, are said to be prone to fires in side-impact crashes.
