A public opinion survey indicates that most consumers believe the Japanese automobile industry is leading in technology, but when asked for specific leading companies the same people name domestic automakers. This contradiction may be the result of believing in brand names.

Some Japanese auto manufacturers are being forced to raise prices for 1993 cars, but most US auto manufacturers are holding their prices fairly stable. In 1991, the average transaction price for imported cars was $18,200, while the average domestic price was $16,150.

The phasing out of R-12 refrigerant will mean an inconvenience for many drivers, as switching to the new, more environmentally-safe HFC-134a refrigerant is not always practical. R-12 damages the ozone layer, and production will be stopped at the end of 1995.
