The Survivor
Article Abstract:
The National Low-Emission Vehicle (NLEV) standards for automobile exhaust that will be in effect in 2001 will reduce the pollutants from the internal combustion engine by 96.3% compared to the cars of the 1960s. Tests indicate that exhaust hydrocarbons are much higher when the catalyst is cold and fall to nearly zero after 100 seconds. Improvements in fuel economy are another reason that the internal combustion engine will not soon be replaced.
