The original hope was to race identically prepared RX-8s, but Mazda did not want to put its brand-new sports car through such a grueling 25-hour test so they put in two identically prepped Spec Miatas with the caveat that a driver from Mazda be on each team. The race had seventy-three cars attacking Thunderhill's 3-mile tract, a delectable mix of uphills, downhills, blind crests, hairy kinks, fast sweepers and long straights that made it a superb test of horsepower, handling and driver talent.

Blowin' in the wind

NASCAR officials recently decided to conduct wind-tunnel tests on several race cars competing in the Winston Cup. It is believed that the investigation is related to complaints that the Chevrolet Monte Carlo enjoys an unfair aerodynamic advantage over the Ford Thunderbird and Pontiac Grand Prix.
