A Bacillus subtilis spore coat polypeptide gene, cotS

Article Abstract:

The EcoRI fragment of the Bacillus subtilis chromosome contains the cotS gene which encodes for the spore coat Cot40-2 polypeptide and the orfX gene. The DNA fragment does not have any terminator-like sequences and the cotS gene is probably present on a multicistronic operon which has a sigmaK-controlled promotor. The genes cotS and orfX are transcribed into mRNA together coinciding the time of the spore coat proteins synthesis. However mutations of cotS do not affect the growth, sporulation, germination or chloroform tolerance of the mutant bacterial cells.

The gerC locus of Bacillus subtilis, required for menaquinone biosynthesis, is concerned only indirectly with spore germination

Article Abstract:

The roles of the gerC mutant of Bacillus subtilis and its suppressed strains in alanine germination were investigated by studying the mutant's growth and germination defects. It was observed that the germination of the suppressed derivatives vary from normal to slow in all germinants. Moreover, spores with very different germination properties resulted from the combination of the gerC mutation and the suppressor alleles indicating an indirect link between the gerC gene products and spore germination.

The Bacillus subtilis yabQ gene is essential for formation of the spore cortex

Article Abstract:

Results reveal that deletion of the yabQ gene from the operon yabP-yabQ-divlC-yabR, leads to a decreased spore production suggesting that it is essential for sporulation. Data further indicate that the yabQ gene is also involved in formation of the spore cortex.
