A late Tertiary woodcock from Menorca, Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean
Article Abstract:
An example of Scolopax carmesinae n. sp. has been found in late Tertiary coastal outcrops of Punta Nati, northwest Menorca, Balearic Islands. The overall Scolopacinae conformation is completely recognizable, with differentiation from Gallinagininae having taken place before the end of the Tertiary. Scolopax carmisinae n. sp. could be regarded as an ancestor of S. rusticola lineage, with an alternative hypothesis being a transatlantic origin of Scolopax anthonyi, probably a more recent arrival of Old World woodcocks to the New World.

Taxonomy and natural history of Nyctiphrynus rosenbergi (Caprimulgidae)
Article Abstract:
The nightjar Nyctiphryus rosenbergi should be treated as a separate species from N. ocellatus due to several distinct differences in morphology, vocalization and natural history. N. rosenbergi breeds from March through June and is an insectivore. It is endemic to the Choco faunal region, from Choco, Colombia to northeastern Ecuador. As it prefers very wet forest habitat, there are no pressing conservation concerns. Choco Poorwill is suggested for its English proper name.

Molecular systematics of the rhinocryptid genus Pteroptochos
Article Abstract:
Complete sequences of mitochondrial genes COII and ND3 were used to investigate relationships within the rhinocryptid genus Pteroptochos. P. castaneus, P. tarnii and P. megapodius were found to be separate lineages. There was high sequence divergence between species and the high genetic divergence between P. casteneus and P. tarnii is consistent with plumage and vocal differences.
