A splice variant of CD44 expressed in the apical ectodermal ridge presents fibroblast growth factors to limb mesenchyme and is required for limb outgrowth
Article Abstract:
CD44 is a splice variant that seems essential for the growth of limb mesenchymal cells. CD44 carries epitopes that colocalize temporally and spatially with fibroblast growth factor-8 in the apical ectodermal ridge during early limb development. CD44 is probably relevant in physiological and pathological cases where signaling molecules are presented to neighboring cells by cell surface proteins.
