Absence of vanA- and vanB-containing enterococci in poultry raised on nonintensive production farms in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Cloacal samples from poultry raised on nonintensive production farms in Brazil for the presence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci is examined. No vanA- or vanB-containing enterococci are identified in a total of 200 cloacal swabs and this absence implies that poultry raised through nonintensive production systems are not reserviors from which vancomycin resistance has spread in Brazil.

Occurrence, structure, and mobility of Tn1546-like elements in environmental isolates of vancomycin-resistant enterococci

Article Abstract:

The structure and mobility of Tn1546-like elements were studied in environmental vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) isolated from sludge, pharmaceutical waste and sewage. It was found that Tn1546-like elements could easily transfer between enterococci of different species or ecological origin.

Predominance of vanA genotype among vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus isolates from poultry and swine in Costa Rica

Article Abstract:

The presence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in poultry, swine and cattle fecal samples obtained during 1998 and 1999 are evaluated. The findings state that the vanA determinant is predominant among diverse interococal species from poultry and pigs but not from cattle.
