Analysis of molecular variance inferred from metric distances among DNA haplotypes: application to human mitochondrial DNA restriction data

Article Abstract:

A heirarchical analysis of molecular variance was constructed using data from DNA restriction endonuclease haplotype patterns to calculate the squared distances between all pairs of haplotypes. The analysis was used to characterize human mitochondrial DNA haplotype data. The results showed substantial subdivision among the human populations, with a large fraction of the variation found within populations. Population subdivisions arebetter resolved when some measure of molecular differences among haplotypes areintroduced. Other aspects concerning regional and population diversity are discussed.

Separating population structure from population history: a cladistic analysis of the geographical distribution of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes in the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum

Article Abstract:

Samples of Ambystoma tigrinum were used to evaluate the cladistic approach as the basis for genetic distance or identity measurement. The method employed a character-state based haplotype evolutionary tree to analyze mitochondrial DNA restriction site haplotypes in the tiger salamander. The nested cladistic approach showed applicability to tests of null hypothesis without haplotype geographical association and tests of significant associations.

Mode of origin and sources of genotypic diversity in triploid gynogenetic fish clones (Poeciliopsis: Poeciliidae)

Article Abstract:

Allozyme and mitochondrial DNA analyses were conducted on five clonal strains of triploid Poeciliopsis to determine the possible modes of origin of triploidy in these fishes. The results showed that each triploid is a hybrid composed of genomes of two sexually-reproducing species, P. monacha and P. lucida. The results are in agreement with the genome addition hypothesis to account for the origin of allotriploid biotypes of Poeciliopsis.
