Expression of a plant protein by Neurospora crassa

Article Abstract:

Microbiological research shows that the fungus Neurospora crassa is capable of producing and secreting the plant protein called zeamatin. The method used to achieve heterologous expression of the plant genes involved the use of a deoxyribonucleic acid plasmid pGEZ. Genetically modified fungal strains were cultivated in prime conditions and induced for zeamatin production.

Zeamatin inhibits trypsin and alpha-amylase activities

Article Abstract:

The protein zeamatin from corn inhibits insect alpha-amylase but not human alpha-amylase. It also inhibits the enzyme trypsin, but only at very high concentrations. For this reason, it could be used therapeutically to treat fungal infections, since it permeabilizes fungal cells and causes cell death.
