Bacterial community associated with black band disease in corals

Article Abstract:

Studies done to characterize the composition of the dominant and potentially important bacteria present in the black band disease ( BBD) bacterial mat are presented. The infectious bacterial community of the bacterial mat causing BBD was characterized using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP). The results of the study suggest that the presence of the filamentous cyanobacterium is the driving force that controls the final composition of the BBD mat.

Cyanobacteria associated with coral black band disease in Carribbean and Indo-Pacific Reefs

Article Abstract:

The cyano bacteria in similar black band disease bacterial mats from Carribbean and Indo-Pacific Seas belong to at least three different taxa instead of a single species as previously reported. The phylogenetic study is carried out using cyanobacterium-specific 16S rRNA gene primers and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis.

Identification of differential gene expression in bacteria associated with coral black band disease by using RNA arbitrarily primed PCR

Article Abstract:

Coral reefs are reservoirs of biodiversity in oceans but the black band disease (BBD) is the worst disease affecting corals. In this study the gene activity for this disease on infected surfaces of corals are examined and compared to those of BBD affected corals suspended in sea water.
