Beta1 integrins and neural stem cells: Making sense of the intracellular environment

Article Abstract:

Neural Stem Cells (NSC) is present in the developing and adult CNS where beta1 integrins mat act as sensors for the changing intracellular matrix. The integrative functions that beta1 integrins may play in the 'niche' by regulating NSC growth factor responsiveness in a timely and spatially controlled manner is highlighted.

Apical meristems: the plant's fountain of youth

Article Abstract:

A recent study suggests that stem cells are localized in specialized niches where signals from surrounding cells maintain their undifferentiated state. The current knowledge about the regulation of plant cells and their environments with main emphasis on the shoot apical meristem of Arabidopsis thaliana are discussed.

Stem cells as probabilistic self-producing entities

Article Abstract:

A theoretical framework for stem cell biology based on the concepts of autopoiesis (self-production) and complementarily is proposed. Stem cells raise a number of fundamental questions regarding lineage restriction and cellular differentiation, and they hold enormous promise for cell-based therapies.
