Bird migration: methodologies and major research trajectories (1945-1995)
Article Abstract:
Classical methods in bird migration studies, such as field observation using binoculars and telescopes, contributed information on the seasonal and temporal patterns of many species. Migration stopover studies, the use of bird-banding, and mortality studies have also been important. The development of radiotelemetry and tracking radar studies in the 1960s improved understanding of the behavior of migrating birds. Advancements in molecular genetics improved studies of sex and population characteristics of birds. Research areas include immediate causation, ontogeny of migratory behavior, phylogeny, evolution and function.

Seasonal, diel, and spatial dispersion patterns of Golden Eagle autumn migration in Southwestern Montana
Article Abstract:
Adult Golden Eagles in Southwestern Montana migrate later in the season and spend less time of the day migrating as compared to immature birds. The adult Golden Eagles are very selective about the time of the day during which they migrate. The birds migrate randomly, fail to respond to each other visually and show no aggregation. This indicates that they do not use other migrants to determine areas of updrafts.

Flight costs and fuel composition of a bird migrating in a wind tunnel
Article Abstract:
Research concerning the protein balance and energy usage of a Thrush Nightingale flying for 12 hours in a wind tunnel for 2 days in succession, is presented. The bird was studied during the following two-day refuelling period.
