Chromosomal rearrangements during vegetative growth of a wild strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that asexual reproduction allows chromosomal rearrangements as natural strains multiply by vegetative growth is discussed. Experiments involved the electrophoretic karyotypes of two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The stability of the chromosomal DNA patterns for both strains were compared. The occurence of chromosomal structure reorganization during mitosis could partly explain chromosome length polymorphism.

Role of growth phase and ethanol in freeze-thaw stress resistance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

The growth conditions that induce maximum freeze-thaw tolerance in an aerobic batch culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. Experiments were conducted under conditions of rapid freezing with ethanol being substituted with other carbon sources. A direct linkage was established between respiration and glucose as ethanol demonstrated its capability of being a respirable carbon source and a cryoprotectant.

The relationship between viability and intracellular pH in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

The ability of the brewer's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and baker's yeast to proliferate may be related to the pH inside of the cells, particularly when the external pH is low. Intracellular pH was measured in yeast cells that were deactivated by treating them with heat, alcohol, or low temperatures. These results suggest that shut down of proton transport is related to the loss of viability.
