Chromosome chains and platypus sex: Kinky connections

Article Abstract:

Mammal sex determination depends on an XY chromosome system, a gene for testis development and a means of activating the X chromosome. Although female mammals have two X chromosomes, while males have only one, the expression level of most X-linked genes is the same in both sexes.

Sex determination: insights from the chicken

Article Abstract:

The gonadal development in the chicken has provided insights into the molecular genetics of vertebrate sex determination and its evolution. According to the results, two novel W-linked genes, ASW and FET1, represent candidate female determinants.

The ends of continuum: genetic and temperature-dependant sex determination in reptiles

Article Abstract:

A research indicates that genetic and environmental sex determining mechanisms in reptiles are fundamentally different. The diversification of sex determining modes in reptiles is discussed.
