Comparative survival of free Shiga toxin 2-encoding phages and Escherichia coli strains outside the gut
Article Abstract:
To assess whether Stx2-encoding bacteriophages stay in the environment more successfully than host bacteria, and to compare survival, experiments were carried out. Ratios of numbers of E. coli and those of the various phages were lower in river water than in sewage of the same area. Ratios of numbers of the different phages were similar. It can be seen that Stx2-encoding phages last longer than the host bacteria in the water environment and are more resistant than host bacteria to chlorination and heat treatment.

Characterization of a bacteriocin-like substance produced by a vaginal Lactobacillus salivarius strain
Article Abstract:
A novel bacteriocin-like substance has been found to be produced by vaginal Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salivarius CRL 1328. The substance has bactericidal activity against several bacteria and might be useful for design of a probiotic for urogenital infections. The heat-resistant peptide or protein was produced most in the late exponential phase.
