Comparison of two techniques for measurement of visceral adipose tissue cross-sectional areas by computed tomography
Article Abstract:
Visceral adipose tissue can be measured using an X-ray film of a computed tomography (CT) scan that is analyzed by an imaging densitometer and NIH image analysis software. This provides a method for use with first generation CT scanners that do not have the software for measuring adipose tissue. The results from the two techniques are strongly correlated, although the imaging method tends to give higher values. A standardized correction should be made if measurements from the two methods are to be compared.

Syndrome X in children: influence of ethnicity and visceral fat
Article Abstract:
Syndrome X is the group of risk factors for cardiovascular disease related to obesity in adults, but it has been detected in children. Studies have shown that basal and post-challenge insulin are significantly higher in African American, Mexican-American, and Pima Indian children compared to white children, suggesting ethnicity plays a role in Syndrome X.

Genetics of abdominal visceral fat levels
Article Abstract:
Precise determination of abdominal visceral fat (AVF) levels is limited to methods such as magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography. Few studies have been able to examine the role of genetic factors on AVF levels. A 1998 study found between 50% and 55% of variance in AVF levels can be attributed to genetic factors.
