Consumption of methane and C[O.sub.2] by methanotrophic microbial mats from gas seeps of the anoxic Black Sea

Article Abstract:

The spatial patterns of C[H.sub.4] and C[O.sub.2] assimilation are investigated in relation to the distribution of anaerobic methanotroph (ANME) groups and their associated bacteria from the anoxic Black Sea. The analysis has shown that since the methane formation requires the presence of methane and sulfate, the process is a rereaction of anaerobic oxidation of methane rather than net methanogenesis.

Subsurface microbial methanotrophic mats in the Black Sea

Article Abstract:

A nodule-shaped microbial mat was found subsurface in sediments of a gas seep in the anoxic Black Sea. The mat was dominated by ANME-1 archaea and consumed methane and sulfate simultaneously and represents the initial stage of previously investigated microbial reefs.

Effects of temperature and pressure on sulfate reduction and anaerobic oxidation of methane in hydrothermal sediments of Guaymas Basin

Article Abstract:

Rates of sulfate reduction (SR) along with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in hydrothermal deep-sea sediments are measured. Beggiatoa cores from Guaymas Basin are responsible for AOM at temperatures above 30 Degree.
