DNA fragments from regions involved in surface antigen expression specifically identify Listeria monocytogenes serovar 4 and a subset thereof: cluster IIB (serotypes 4b, 4d, and 4e)
Article Abstract:
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that reacted with Listeria monocytogenes serovar 4 and cluster IIB were utilized to identify the genomic regions responsible for the expression of surface antigens in the pathogenic microbe. The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probe 1 from the two novel genomic regions of the microbe was specific for serotypes 4b, 4d and 4e strains. Furthermore, three Listeria innocua strains that were positive with MAbs c74.22 and c74.33 reacted with the DNA probes due to the presence of similar surface antigenic composition from both strains.

Host-mediated modification of Sau3AI restriction in Listeria monocytogenes: prevalence in epidemic-associated strains
Article Abstract:
Strains of Listeria monocytogenes responsible for recent outbreaks of food-borne listeriosis can modify the Sau3AI restriction endonuclease. These strains also exhibit decreased plaque formation produced from phage of other strains. There was no modification observed when the DNA was cloned in Escherichia coli indicating that the modification was host-mediated in L. monocytogenes. Additional studies should be done whether the modification also affects gene replication and expression in the bacteria strains studied.

Differentiation of epidemic-associated strains of Listeria monocytogenes by restriction fragment length polymorphism in a gene region essential for growth at low temperatures (4 degree celsius)
Article Abstract:
DNA probes obtained from the gene regions of Listeria monocytogenes necessary for growth at low temperatures are effective for molecular subtyping and differentiation of epidemic-related strains. The probes are formed from the ltrA, ltrB and ltrC genes. The polymorphism patterns of HindIII restriction fragment length show that there are two groups in serotype 4b strains.
