Density of loons in Central Alaska
Article Abstract:
Aerial line transect methodology was used in the survey of Common Loons (Gavia immer) in the Yukon Flats. This robust methodology has the advantage of automatically correcting for visibility bias. The method is easy to repeat, and the resulting density estimates is on the conservative side. This methodology is affected by the propensity of loons to dive, the number of loon species in the area and whether pre-fledged young are counted. Future surveys are recommended to include as much information as possible for accurate comparisons.

Black Brant winter and spring-staging use at two Washington coastal areas in relation to eelgrass abundance
Article Abstract:
A study of Black Brant winter and spring-staging use at Willapa Bay and Dungeness area in Washington, DC revealed Black Brant use in both locations to be dependent on the degree of accessibility of eelgrass beds. This reveals the mitigated endogenous reserves and significant reproductive failure of Black Brant in the regions as consequences of depleted eelgrass beds during the period of spring-staging.

Size characteristics of stones ingested by Common Loons
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the size characteristics of ingested stones recovered from the carcasses of Common Loons in the southeastern US and New England. The poisoning of birds through the ingestion of lead fishing weights is discussed.
