Dissimilatory iron reduction and odor indicator abatement by biofilm communities in swine manure microcosms
Article Abstract:
A novel approach to swine waste odor reduction is investigated in the form of the addition of FeCl3, a commonly used coagulant in municipal wastewater treatment, to stimulate degradation of odorous compounds by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB). DNA sequences obtained from rRNA gene amplicons of bacterial communities in FeCl3-treated microcosms were closely related to Desulfitobacterium spp., which are known representatives of DIRB.

Phylum- and class specific PCR primers for general microbial community analysis
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to develop several primer sets targeting commonly occurring and important groups. The results revealed that eighty-five to 100% of the sequences obtained from clone libraries were found to be placed with the groups indented as targets, demonstrating the specificity of the primers under field conditions.
