Distribution and diversity of sulfur-oxidizing Thiomicrospira spp. at a shallow-water hydrothermal vent in the Aegean Sea (Milos, Greece)

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the diversity and distribution of the chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thiomicrospira in a shallow-water hydrothermal vent system in the Aegean Sea near the island of Milos, Greece. A phylogenetic investigation of Thiomicrospira spp present in the highest most-probable-number dilutions indicate that most of the derived sequences grouped in two new closely related clusters within the Thiomicrospira branch. Results indicate that Thiomicrospira species are relevant members of hydrothermal vent communities.

Spatial heterogeneity of bacterial populations along an environmental gradient at a shallow submarine hydrothermal vent near Milos Island (Greece)

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the spatial heterogeneity of bacterial populations along an environmental gradient at a shallow submarine hydrothermal vent near Milos Island, Greece. The analysis was performed twice through the use of acridine orange staining for total cell counts, cultivation-based methods and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments. Results reveal that the changing physico-chemical conditions at the vent site affected bacterial distribution and community structure.

Relative abundance of Archaea and Bacteria along a thermal gradient of a shallow-water hydrothermal vent quantified by rRNA slot-blot hybridization

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that there is an abundance of Bacteria relative to that of Archaea along a thermal gradient of a shallow submarine hydrothermal vent. Data indicate that contrary to the widely held view, Bacteria seem to dominate high temperature realm than Archaea.
