Duplication of the Brassica oleracea APETALA1 floral homeotic gene and the evolution of domesticated cauliflower

Article Abstract:

Genetic analysis in Arabidopsis thaliana suggests the involvement of the Cauliflower and Apetala1 loci. In Brassica oleracea, the orthologue to the Arabidopsis AP1 gene is BoAP1, which appears to encode a full-length protein, but the allele is shown to have a premature termination codon at position 151. However, studies have been unable to determine whether a mutant BoAP1 allele is present in ssp. botrytis. A new study reveals the presence of BoAP1 in two copies in Brassica genomes. One copy encodes a full-length protein and the other encodes a prematurely ended protein. Such mutations may be linked to the evolution of the domesticated cauliflower.

Female and hermaphrodite flowers on a chimeric gynomonoecious Silene vulgaris plant produce offspring with different genders: a case of heteroplasmic sex determination?

Article Abstract:

Gynodioecious plants have either hermaphrodite or female flowers, but some individuals may have both types and are known as gynomonoecious. Such individuals are regarded as representing the developmental outcome of an incomplete restoration of male-sterilizing cytoplasm by nuclear male fertility genes. A new study investigates whether flower segregation on gynomonoecious plants of the common weed Silene vulgaris is linked to a difference in offspring gender. Results show that hermaphroditic and female flowers on the same plant result in offspring of all three types but with different time frequencies.
