Efficacy of Marek's disease vaccines in Mhc heterozygous chickens: Mhc congenic X inbred line F1 matings

Article Abstract:

A study shows that Mhc (B) heterozygous chickens treated with four different Marek's disease (MD) vaccines had various immune responses, from total immunity to minimal immunity. The models used are B2 homozygotes inbred with 15.B congenic males. Five varieties of chicks were vaccinated with any of four MD vaccines and their different responses are related to B-haplotype gene differences in the hybrid chicks. Chickens of a certain Mhc genotype were found to be immune when treated with one specific vaccine.

Developmental stability in different genetic stocks of white rock chickens

Article Abstract:

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) provides a good measure of developmental stability in white rock chickens. Shank length and diameter showed FA in all groups, but feather weight and length showed FA in low 56 day body weight (LWS) nonlayers, antisymmetry in a subline of LWS where selection had been relaxed by four generations (LWR) and directional asymmetry in LWS layers. The sharp rise in FA in line LWS may be due to genetic stress per se or genetic stress caused by more sensitivity to environmental factors.

Identification of Rfp-Y (Mhc-like) haplotypes in chickens of Cornell lines N and P

Article Abstract:

Restriction fragment length polymorphism and probes for Rfp-Y, major histocompatibility complex-like genes in chickens, were used in the genetic analysis of two lines of chicken segregated based on their resistance to Merek's disease. There was a difference in the haplotype composition of the two chicken line. The major histocompatibility complex-like genes in chickens segregates in a Mendelian fashion based on the hybridization studies conducted.
