Environmental factors affecting the occurrence of mycobacteria in brook waters
Article Abstract:
The effect of environmental factors on the occurrence of environmental mycobacteria was evaluated. Water samples were collected from 53 drainage areas in Finland. Local precipitation data, water temperature, acidity, electrical conductivity and the amount of heterotrophic bacteria and cultivated mycobacteria were calculated and analyzedby Spearman rank correlation analyses and stepwise linear multiple regression analyses. It was found that the occurrence of brook water mycobacteria is affected by several environmental factors.

Virus decay and its causes in coastal waters
Article Abstract:
Solar radiation is an important cause of virus decay in coastal waters of Santa Monica Bay. Native viruses decay at a slower rate in contrast to non-native marine bacteriophages, suggesting an evolutionary adaptation to local light levels. All viral species are susceptibility to degradation by heat-labile substances and high-molecular-weight dissolved material. Filtration reduces the decay rate by varying amounts.

Occurrence of 1-glyceryl-1-myo-insoityl phosphate in hyperthermophiles
Article Abstract:
The accumulation of compatible solutes is studied in the hyperthermophilic bacterium Aquifex pyrophilus as a function of the temperature and the NaCl concentration of the growth medium. The results reveal the presence of alpha- and beta-glutamate, di-mannosyl-di-myo-inositol phosphate, di-myo-imositol phosphate, and a compound identified as 1-glyceryl-1-myo-insoityl phosphate in living systems.
