Evidence for the ubiquity of mixotrophic bacteria in the upper ocean: Implications and consequences

Article Abstract:

Biogeochemical studies of marine environment have indicated that mixotrophic bacteria might be major players in photo-, hetero-, auto- and organotrophic processes in the upper ocean. The mixotrophic microbes and their suspected diversity and ecophysiology have demanded a basic revision in the basic concepts about the biogeochemical cycles, carbon and energy flow in aquatic environments.

Intergeneric coaggregation among drinking water bacteria: evidence of a role for Acinetobacter calcoaceticus as a bridging bacterium

Article Abstract:

Intergeneric coaggregation of drinking water bacteria, the roles of surface proteins and saccharides in the coaggregation process and the role of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus as a bridging bacterium are examined. Multispecies biofilm studies have shown the putative bridging function of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus through a strain exclusion process.

Comparison of primer sets for use in automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis of aquatic bacterial communities: An ecological perspective

Article Abstract:

Two primer sets for automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) are used for assessing the bacterial community composition (BCC) in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin. The analysis has shown that ARISA is a powerful tool for evaluating the changes in BCC through space and time, regardless of the specific primer set used.
