Evidence that Ceriporiopsis subvermispora degrades nonphenolic lignin structures by a one-electron-oxidation mechanism
Article Abstract:
Ceriopsis subvermispora does not express the lignin degrading enzyme lignin peroxidase yet it is able to metabolize lignin. Model lignin compounds were designed to yield fragments resistant to intracellular fungal metabolism to determine the mechanism with which Ceriopsis metabolize lignin. Results of radiocarbon nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicate that a one-electron-oxidation process is at work in the degradation of lignin in Ceriopsis.

Article Abstract:
Daldinia concentrica degrades the recalcitrant nonphenolic structures in lignin. One of the processes responsible is the [C.sub.alpha]-[C.sub.beta] cleavage of the lignin propyl side chain.
